The sock thief
Every laundry day, one sock vanished. We found forty-two of them behind his bed after he turned ten.

His story
Cooper came home on a rainy Saturday in June 2012, a nine-week-old ball of fluff who fell asleep in a shoe box before he ever saw the living room. By Monday he had claimed the sofa. By Friday he had claimed us.
For fourteen years he was the first to the door and the last to leave the park. He greeted every stranger like an old friend, offering his paw before anyone had said a word. Neighbors who never learned our names knew his.
He loved the lake path at sunrise, peanut butter on a spoon, and a tennis ball so worn it had no fuzz left. In his last months he slowed down, but he never stopped wagging. He passed peacefully at home, with his head on our laps.
His life
One of seven puppies, and the one who howled at the vacuum.
Slept in a shoe box, woke up as the boss of the house.
Chased one wave, lost, and spent the afternoon trying again.
The family bought a lock. He learned to open that too.
Everyone on the morning route knew him by name.
Peaceful at home, surrounded by the people he loved most.
Favorite memories

Same lake, same bench, every morning. He would sit and watch the ducks like he was the lifeguard on duty.
He offered it to the mail carrier, the vet, the plumber, and once a very confused cat. Nobody ever said no.
